F.R.E.S.H. Gardens
“An elderly lady residing at the Ella Besaw Center used to tend to a large garden many years ago. With FRESH Project’s assistance in providing seeds, planting, and weeding she harvest produce for the kitchen staff to prepare for all to enjoy.”
Since 2017, we planted and harvested more than 30,000 pounds throughout our eight gardens, serving our community with fresh food and education. Currently, the F.R.E.S.H. Project has two gardens in Red River and all produce harvested supported our communities through the Share the Bounty tables, local food pantries, and shelters.
CBS Local 5’s report on the FRESH gardens and Share the Bounty tables
Grow a Row – Share a RowA Hunger Prevention Project Program that runs June through October The F.R.E.S.H. Project’s Share the Bounty tables shared more than 30,000 pounds of produce since 2017! Produce harvested from our eight gardens and area gardeners donated home-grown fruits and vegetables to share within the community. Gardeners brought their produce to drop-off sites in Shawano County where it was then distributed to those who can use it. We are so grateful to all the gardeners to Grew an Extra Row – and donated to the Share the Bounty tables. If you are interested donating your extra produce in the 2020 growing season, it really is a simple program. All varieties of fruits and vegetables are accepted in quantities both large and small. Produce should be reasonably clean. Containers are provided on site. This is a “win-win” situation because gardeners’ produce will not go to waste and recipients get healthy food at no cost. We ask all donors log in what they brought and the weight of the donation. There is no income requirements or paperwork for the recipients. |

$5 Token Program
Keeping in line with the Good Food for Everyone, The F.R.E.S.H. Project distributes $5 tokens to anyone who receives Food Share (EBT) and WIC cards at the Shawano Farmers Market. This program allows those in need to enjoy fresh vegetables. Visit the F.R.E.S.H. Project stand, show us your participating card and we will provide $5 to purchase fresh produce from participating vendors. The vendors then returned the tokens to us and we reimbursed them for the amount of tokens they received. The $5 Token Program is sponsored by Shawano Area Community Foundation and Theda Care.
