The F.R.E.S.H. Project is working to fight food insecurity, which means someone isn’t sure if they’ll be able to have food tonight or tomorrow, and to promote food security, so people won’t have to worry whether or not they or their children will be able to eat.
In order to accomplish that vision, the F.R.E.S.H. Project is focused on
- Understanding the challenges people face in having a healthy diet;
- Changing how we operate as a community, so that people will have food security;
- Increasing knowledge in the community about healthy and sustainable food systems; and
- Developing a strong coalition of groups and individuals to continue this important work.
What has the F.R.E.S.H. Project accomplished?
Using funding from an American Planning Association grant, the F.R.E.S.H. Project has:
- Built a coalition of over two dozen people representing native nations, county government, community groups, churches, farmers and interested individuals;
- Conducted a survey of more than 750 households and held six focus group listening sessions in Shawano County to better understand the challenges of having access to good food;
- Created a series of recommendations that will make a positive impact on food security for all our area’s residents.
